Hollywood vs. Waterfall Stair Runners Pros and Cons

So you’ve decided that you’re ready to install a stair runner, and now you need to choose the right installation style for your home.

Installation style? That’s right. Staircase carpet runners are installed using two different methods:  Hollywood or Waterfall.

If you’ve never heard of this terminology, you’re not alone. After installing stair carpet runners for generations of customers, we’ve found that many of our customers never considered the different types of stair runner styles.

Don’t worry! By the end of this article you’ll be an expert on stair runner carpet styles and well on your way to a gorgeous new carpet runner you’ll love for life.

So let’s start with the basics.

Hollywood Stair Runners

A Hollywood installation method is where the carpet is tacked down directly onto the staircase and wrapped around the edge of the tread. In fact, the carpet is stapled under the nose of the stair itself giving the staircase a crisp tailored look.

At Kashian Bros, we always visit our customers homes to take  precise measurements and determine the best installation style.

Take a look at this Hollywood striped stunner we installed for a customer in Wilmette:

Our customers rely on our complimentary design services to choose the style that matches their aesthetic.

Hollywood style can also provide some interest to a simpler carpet like this neutral wool carpet below:

Waterfall Stair Runners

The Waterfall method brings the carpet straight over the edge of the tread to create a clean look ideal for patterns. Sometimes the Waterfall style is chosen if there is molding on the edge of the stair, so the carpet runner falls beautifully over the edge.

See how elegant the Waterfall style looks on this Winnetka staircase:

Waterfall style can really make a pattern stand out, since it allows for a continuous pattern without interruption. Take a look at this diamond pattern:

Don’t think you are limited to choosing one or the other style. In some instances, these two methods can also be combined for a custom look! See how the landings on this  patterned stair runner stand out in a Hollywood style, while the stairs looks elegant in a Waterfall style.
